Nigerian fashion has come a long way in the last couple of decades. As with style and fashion anywhere else in the world, Nigerian fashion has trends that come and go as time passes. Now, Nigerian fashion has taken a new turn with the evolution of a couple of classics, the addition of new elements, and shoulders making a bolder statement than ever before.

As a Nigerian stylist, designer, fashionista, of style enthusiast that needs to keep abreast of the latest trends, we’ve got you covered. Here are the latest trends in Nigerian women’s fashion:

One of the latest and most popular trends in Nigerian fashion right now is the fringe trend. Fringe is one of the most popular elements of cowboy/Texan fashion, and most people are familiar with it by now. Fringe is being infused into the Nigerian style scene through skirts, dressed, sleeves, and iro (wrappers). The fringe trend is super style and people keep coming up with new and innovative ways to make it pop.

Mules are currently making a huge comeback in the Nigerian fashion scene. They are being embraced by fashionable young ladies all over the country. Gone are the days when they were reserved for mums and grandmas to wear to owambes. Mules are now available in different forms, styles, colors, and patterns and are being worn any and every where.

Off-Shoulder Tops and Dresses:

Shoulders are coming out to play and taking center stage thanks to the off-shoulder trend. More and more women are opting for this style and so it’s not uncommon to see off-shoulder blouses, crop tops, and dresses any and everywhere. It’s a super stylish trend, and one you should definitely hop on.

Bell Sleeves:

Dramatic sleeves are making waves now, and bell sleeves are leading the pack. Bell sleeves are exciting, freeing, and add a touch of class to every item they’re added to. Clothes with bell sleeves can be worn anywhere, from church or work to parties and on dates.

Trousers are not left behind in the latest wave that’s sweeping through Nigerian fashion. Palazzos have been around for a long time, and they’re currently trendier than ever in the Nigerian style scene. Fashion influencers and celebrities are wholeheartedly embracing the palazzo trend, and you should too. Palazzos are great because they can be worn to a virtually endless list of places, and paired with tons of tops/shirts/blouses and shoes/sandals to create amazing outfits.

Cold Shoulders:

The cold shoulder trend is another major way shoulders are taking center stage in the Nigerian fashion and style scene. Unlike with the off-shoulder trend where shoulder coverings are completely absent, cold shoulders feature a cut out of some sort from the shoulder area, giving you room to still show off some or a lot of skin. It’s all up to you.

There you have it – the trends that are currently defining and shaping the Nigerian fashion scene. You definitely don’t have to stick to one trend. You have the liberty to mix and match as you please – just let your creativity lead the way.
